Used For
This medicine is a diuretic used to remove excess water from the body and control blood pressure. You may take it by mouth or given as an injection.
Do’s and Dont’s
Do’s
This medicine increases the amount and frequency of urination.   Take it early in the day to avoid interrupting your sleep at night.
Take any other medicine your doctor may prescribe along with    this medicine.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is   nearly time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the   missed dose and take the next one as directed.
Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor.

Dont’s
Taking too much may make you urinate too much and cause    dehydration.
Do not take double doses. If you are not sure of what to do if you   miss a dose, or if you miss more than one dose, contact your   doctor.

Caution

This medicine may drive potassium (a vital mineral) from your   body. Your doctor may prescribe a potassium-rich diet (bananas   are rich in potassium) or a potassium supplement for you to take   daily.
When you get up quickly after sitting or lying down, you may feel   dizzy or faint. Getting up slowly may help.
If you have any severe nausea or diarrhoea after you start taking   this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.

Allergic reaction: If you develop an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, tightness in your chest, trouble breathing), call your doctor right away. If you cannot reach your doctor right away, get emergency medical care.

Skin problems: This medicine may make your skin more  sensitive to the sun and may cause you to sunburn more easily.   Avoid long periods of exposure to the sun. While you are in the   sun, wear protective clothing and sunscreen lotion until you know   how you will react to the sun. Don’t use a sunlamp. If you get   severe sunburn, contact your doctor immediately.

Diabetics: If you are taking insulin or another medicine for diabetes, talk to your doctor because your dosage may need to be   changed.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.   Do not breast-feed while you are taking this medicine.

Likely Side Effects
Your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some of them may be very serious. Some side effects may disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that persist or get worse.

Life-threatening: (report to your doctor immediately. If you cannot reach your doctor right away, get emergency medical treatment): Allergic reaction (hives, itching, rash, tightness in your chest, trouble breathing).

Serious side Effects (report to your doctor immediately): Ringing in your ears, loss of hearing, sore throat, fever, severe nausea or diarrhoea, joint pain, yellowish eyes or skin.

Note: Ask your doctor about the signs of excess potassium loss so you can avoid this reaction.

Other Side Effects: Dizziness, lightheadedness.

Likely Drug Interactions

When you take this medicine with other medicines, the ways in which the medicines work can change. Also, using these medicines together might cause harmful side effects.


Consult your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Neomycin
Aspirin and other salicylates
Blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin)
Beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal)
Charcoal
Chloral hydrate
Lopid
Digitalis glycosides such as digoxin (Lanoxin)
Lithium
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen naproxen), ketoprofen, indomethacin (Indocid)
Oral diabetes medicines such as chlorpropamide (Diabinese),   glimepiride (Amaryl), glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (DiaBeta,), tolazamide
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Warfarin (Coumadin).Acitrom
