ABOUT CCC

The heart of the matter

A number of factors drive the heart care needs of today’s Indian society. Chief among them are the increase in life expectancy to 64 years, low literacy levels, changes in lifestyle, the increased incidence in Diabetes Mellitus to 10.4% and 4.6% of urban and rural population respectively and environmental pollution.
As a result, more and more hearts are detected with congenital heart diseases and systematic hypertension. Further, the growing incidence of vascular diseases in India results in stroke, Myocardial Infarction (MI) and renal failure.

CCC-At the forefront of the heart care

In response to such problems of the heart, the CCC of SRMC provides world-class care to all – from newborn babies to senior citizens. Our success is the natural outcome of our ability to bring together leading medical professionals, advanced infrastructure and comprehensive clinical services.

The Team: Led by Prof. S. Thanikachalam, the guiding light, our team includes members highly experienced in all areas of specialisation – cardiology, cardio thoracic surgery and cardiac anaesthesiology. The team is well supported by excellent administrative, paramedical and nursing staff.

The Infrastructure: Backing the team is infrastructure that is on par with the latest – be it the outpatient consultation suits, the inpatient services, the cardio thoracic theatres, the intensive cardiac care units or the cardiac rehabilitation units.

The Clinical Services: With fully equipped laboratories, we offer a whole gamut of clinical services – electrocardiography, cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, management of rhythm disorders numerous surgical corrections and medical management.

Shaping the future

At the same time, we also prepare for the emerging challenges in heart care by focussing on human resource development, clinical and basic research and public awareness creation.

Human Resource Development (HRD): The HRD initiatives of the CCC produce highly qualified medical, paramedical and nursing staff. The leading programmes are the Allied Health Science course and the guidance of candidates pursuing post graduation (MD), PhD and post-doctoral qualification in cardiology (DM).

Clinical and Basic Research: From inception, research has been a strong thrust area. Our record in basic and clinical research reflects this concern. We have conducted research on critical issues at all levels – local, regional, national and international. At any moment, we have a number of research projects under way.

Creating awareness among the public: We take the message of quality heart care to the people through our multi-faceted outreach initiatives. The initiatives include the publication of weekly articles in the vernacular press, programmes on television and radio, promotion of telemedicine initiatives, and the conduct of regular camps – on campus and at other locations.
